History
The Story of Paws Up
Originally a working cattle ranch established in the late 1800s, The Resort at Paws Up preserves the authentic spirit of Montana’s frontier legacy. The land, once rugged homesteads and mining claims, lies in the heart of the Blackfoot River Valley, a corridor rich with Native American history and early explorers like Meriwether Lewis.
The property's rich past includes mining booms, timber operations, and homesteaders like Paul Greenough, whose legacy still names the nearby town and the valley itself. Over the decades, the ranch changed hands many times, witnessing Montana’s evolving frontier life.
In 1997, the Lipson family purchased the expansive ranch and named it “Paws Up,” inspired by the playful greeting of dogs, who would put their paws up in the air as a friendly welcome. Since opening in 2005, the resort has transformed the historic cattle ranch into a luxury retreat, preserving its rugged heritage alongside miles of the legendary Blackfoot River, featured in the film A River Runs Through It, directed by Robert Redford and starring Brad Pitt.
The resort’s unique blend of rugged heritage and refined comfort invites guests to connect with Montana’s past while experiencing its wild beauty like never before.

Connected by a wooden boardwalk, this tranquil village of white canvas tents offers a full menu of restorative treatments in private spaces with views of open fields and grazing horses. Welcome tents feature full baths and showers, while individual treatment tents are outfitted with heated massage tables and wide-open views. With the gentle sounds of a nearby brook, birdsong, and rustling leaves, it’s a peaceful, natural escape that redefines what it means to unwind.
